This attic remodel reimagines two unfinished 1856 rooms—separated by a swing door, with exposed A-frame, drafty original windows, and bare floors—into a functional, light-filled retreat. The new layout creates an open plan with a partial wall that gently divides a bedroom area from a dedicated workspace, preserving flow while giving each zone a clear purpose.
The envelope was insulated with R30 batting and finished in luan, chosen for its light weight and ease of transport up a narrow, steep stair. The partial wall incorporates a closet, while the sloped floor-to-ceiling transitions are used for built-in shelving that extends into the narrowing envelope, turning challenging geometry into useful storage. Two skylights introduce generous natural light, and one of the original windows was converted into a French-style operable unit with a custom screen for ventilation. The existing swing door was repurposed to close off an unfinished storage zone, honoring the home’s history while keeping the main space calm and livable. Completed over three months on a modest budget, this project reflects Anita’s ability to balance historic character, practical comfort, and thoughtful use of every inch.
