Sunclipse is an outdoor eyewear concept created for an independent optometrist and eyewear retailer seeking innovation beyond conventional sunglasses. Designed specifically for sunbathing, it addresses two recurring challenges: protecting the retina from harmful sun exposure while minimizing the harsh shadow lines that disrupt even tanning around the eyes.
The design consists of two primary components: a dual-lens shield that covers both eyes and a separate, flexible polymer nose piece. The nose piece expands with gentle pressure to slide onto the bridge of the nose, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit that also plays well with sunscreen and tanning accelerators. The lens shield features a carefully considered gradient sun filter that fully covers and protects the sensitive structures of the eye while softening edges to reduce stark tan lines.
Inspired by the leisure-focused beach-goer who values both skin aesthetics and high-quality eyewear, Sunclipse also responds to sandy, oily environments. Its form and case design support easy handling with greasy hands and help keep lenses cleaner when set down on the beach or poolside. The prototype received professional recognition, including display at an ophthalmology-focused convention in Detroit, Michigan, as well as inclusion in an international design competition.
